Welcome to Territory Mapping
High impact workshops and conferences

Territory Mapping is a proven and highly effective workshop and conference tool designed to achieve three outcomes: CFA.

  • Clarity: understand what problem we are solving or opportunity we are seizing
  • Focus scarce resources on the few must win battles
  • Alignment: ensure we are all fighting the same battle on the same side

A team which has CFA is 80% of the way to success. A team which does not have it is 100% of the way to failure.

Where to use Territory Mapping

Territory Mapping is best used for high stakes events:

  • Merger integration
  • Strategic redirection
  • Reorganisation
  • Major change and project renewal
  • Customer realignment

By then end of a Territory Mapping workshop, the team will have been aligned, mobilised and focussed on the must win battles for the group.

We also use Territory Mapping in the context of leadership development and conference agenda setting: see the tabs opposite for more details. We work with groups of six to six hundred over periods of half a day to a month.

Territory Mapping has developed from our research with both ancient and corporate tribes over the last 25 years. The mapping process has worked with central bank governors, Papua New Guinea tribesmen, Tuareg, Maasai and many public and private sector organisations in Asia, Europe and America.

The corporate challenge and the three Cs.

Bigger is not always better. Even the best organisations have the three C's of complexity, conflict and competition. The worst add crises, chaos and confusion.

Size means complexity

Complexity leads to competing priorities and conflict between functions, geographies and business units.

Conflicting priorities leads to internal competition for limited money, resources, bonus and promotion. For many managers, the real competition is not another company: it is another manager sitting at a desk nearby.

Building the agenda for action

Successful conferences and wokshops lead to action. This can not be achieved with complexity, conflict and competition. To achieve action, we must achieve three outcomes:

  • Clarity about the common challenge we face
  • Focus on the few must win battles
  • Alignment to ensure everyone has the same priorities

How to get started

The simplest starting point is to contact us. If you are running a conference, look under that section. If you have a workshop then we will focus our discussion on:

  • Have you got a high stakes issue which merits support?
  • Who should attend? For workshops we typically work with groups of six to sixteen: smaller groups need one facilitator, larger groups require two.
  • What are the expectations? We will work with you to ensure we focus on the right outcomes: we are not process prisoners. We also ensure the right expectations are set with attendees.
  • What preparation is required? Beyond making sure that we have the right issue, right agenda, right attendance and the right location there is not a lot more that is required. You will be in safe hands as we help your team with their journey.

Why Territory Mapping

Many effective mapping techniques exist. They are good at dealing with detail and with the rational world. Territory Mapping is different.

  • It forces focus on the big picture because people can not draw detail: if people agree the big picture, then the detail follows easily.
  • It engages at an emotional level and achieves an unusual level of honest, energy, discussion and consensus among the participants.
  • It is very effective at communication: most normal humans remember pictures and stories better than emails and memos.

We still do not know why Territory Mapping works in theory. We only know that it works in practice. We have not carefully constructed some abstract theory. We have discovered over many years what is now a very stable and predictable process from the facilitator's perspective. From the participant's perspective Territory Mapping runs the risk of not only being productive, but also of being enjoyable.

We hope you will enjoy this website and enjoy mapping with us.
